Truth about Natural Medicine
A couple of days ago, I wrote an article about why you should be wary of conventional medicine…
And I wanted to follow that up with an explanation of what natural practitioners like myself do, how it differs from mainstream medicine, and why it can be beneficial to your health.
You see, these two very different fields actually have the same original intention – to HEAL you if you have health issues…
But while natural medicine has stayed true to that idea, mainstream medicine has headed in a different direction and created the problems I told you about in my previous article…
Creating a healthcare crisis the likes of which we’ve never seen before in history, putting profits ahead of the actual goal of healing people…
And deriding the natural medicine field as a way of crushing the “competition.”
Today, I want to set the record straight and show you why natural medicine works for so many people and the perfect place to start is with the question I’m asked the most…
What Is “Natural Medicine?”
Essentially, natural medicine is exactly what it sounds like – it’s the practice of improving your health through natural means…
And those natural means can take a wide variety of forms, including ancient techniques, nutrition analysis, plant-based remedies, and methods of increasing your body’s natural ability to heal…
Just take a look at the following list – all of these fall under the natural medicine umbrella…
- Acupuncture to get rid of chronic health issues
- Herbal supplementation for better immunity
- Massage sessions for muscle and mind relaxation
- Diet modification for increased nutrient intake
- Stretching to alleviate joint pain
- Meditation to lower stress and anxiety
And there’s many, many more.
It’s easy to say that natural medicine is based on nature and conventional medicine is based on technology, but it’s actually more complicated than that…
And to understand the difference, you have to look deeper at how these two types of medicine address a health problem…
The Natural Medicine Approach
In the last article, I told you about a hypothetical situation where someone was diagnosed with prediabetes…
I’ll dig further with that same example to show you how natural and mainstream medicine differ in their approaches.
Mainstream Prediabetes Treatment
For conventional medicine, your doctor will ask you about your symptoms and run tests to diagnose that you’re prediabetic…
After the diagnosis, they’ll prescribe Metformin or any of a hundred other pharmaceutical drugs to “treat” prediabetes…
However, treating your prediabetes is not what they actually do…
These drugs are intended to lower the symptoms of prediabetes by increasing how much insulin your body absorbs and preventing future heart problems.
Sounds disconnected, right?
So, the goal of mainstream medicine is to change how your body responds to insulin and prevent your prediabetes from causing other problems…
Instead of regulating how much insulin your body is producing or needs.
And that’s with a prescription drug that’s proven to have a number of side effects, such as weight gain, diarrhea, and abdominal pain – new issues that will need other mainstream medicine “treatments.”
Now, let me show you the…
Natural Prediabetes Treatment
When you visit a natural medicine practitioner, they’ll also ask you about your symptoms and might even run some diagnostic tests…
However, the conversation will include an in-depth look at your eating habits and normal diet, your lifestyle, and any other health issues you may be facing.
From there, the “prescription” will likely include modifying your diet to be more nutritious and with less of a glycemic load, adding spices or herbs that improve your body’s insulin production and response, and stress-reduction techniques that lower insulin resistance.
In short, your natural health expert will be looking for a way to completely stop the prediabetes, not just apply a treatment for the symptoms.
And this is where the approaches differ – natural medicine focuses on curing a condition while most of conventional medicine concentrates on treating symptoms (as mentioned in my last article).
The end result – with natural medicine, you’re able to overcome a problem like prediabetes…
Whereas mainstream medicine will have you taking pills for the rest of your life.
There’s another question that I’m asked frequently and you may be wondering yourself…
Is Natural Medicine Backed By Science?
One of the big claims of mainstream medicine is that it’s all based on science…
And it conjures up an image of dedicated researchers in a lab analyzing compounds and their effects on the body, working night and day to find a cure for terrible diseases…
Now, there are researchers in labs, but the truth is that the vast majority are working for pharmaceutical companies to develop new drugs to sell you, NOT cures for diseases.
On the other hand, the common perception is that natural medicine is about mysticism and lacks any basis in science…
However, that’s not exactly the case.
It is true that natural medicine uses techniques and natural remedies that people have been utilizing for thousands of years (if not longer)…
Before we had the same scientific tools as we do today.
You see, our ancestors had ways of treating health conditions. And maybe they couldn’t explain why, but the simple fact is that their methods WORKED.
In today’s time, natural health experts use these same techniques and ingredient recommendations, and while the treatments were not originally based on scientific research, our modern science is finally catching up.
Much less money is spent in investigating natural medicine techniques than developing new drugs (there’s less profit), but the research that’s being done backs up these ancient techniques considerably…
Consider the conclusions of just a few recent studies:
- St. John’s Wort – Used by natural practitioners to treat depression and anxiety. A 2015 meta-analysis found that it performed as well as pharmaceutical antidepressants with much less adverse effects (in most cases, none).
- Milk Thistle – Used to treat liver issues. A 2012 clinical study found that milk thistle protects the liver from toxins and decreases blood sugar by improving liver function. Now largely accepted by conventional medicine.
- Meditation – Used to relieve stress and anxiety. Proven by a 2014 report to promote brain structure changes, leading to a better response to stress hormones like cortisol.
And there are new studies appearing seemingly every day…
So, what’s happening is a reverse scientific process – researchers are discovering that these tried-and-true treatments DO have scientific proof…
But that proof is only now being uncovered, after thousands of years of use.
The Natural Medicine Takeaway
