If you’ve ever gone to a grocery store and…

  • Been overwhelmed with choices
  • Couldn’t find healthy options
  • Felt like you were being manipulated to buy certain things
  • Or simply thought the prices were too high

Then this article is for you…

Today, I’m going to share with you all the tips and tricks I know about understanding why things at the grocery stores are the way they are…

And in a couple of days, I’ll write another article with the best ways to save money while shopping…

Now, it’s not because I have something against supermarkets in particular – it’s just that I know…

They’re In It FOR THE PROFIT!

50 years ago, your local grocery store might have been catering to you as a valued customer…

But the truth is that times have changed…

And today’s supermarkets have little resemblance to those of the past – they’re national chains that focus on making the most money, NOT offering quality food at an affordable price…

That means they’ll do nearly everything in their power to separate you from your hard-earned dollars.

Well, today, all that changes.

Because I’m going to expose their sneaky strategies and show you how to shop healthy and cost-efficiently.

Let’s start with a few…

Supermarket Basics Every Shopper Should Know

Granted, you’re probably aware of a few of the following ideas as they’ve largely become common knowledge, but I still think they’re worth mentioning:

  • Never shop hungry – Grocery stores are engineered to appeal to all your senses, so if you’re hungry while shopping, the free samples, tantalizing bakery smells, and cooked food will lead you to spend more.
  • Always shop with a list – Not only will you remember to get everything you need, but you’ll also be better prepared to avoid impulse buys.
  • Never buy from the checkout stand – The items there are 99% unhealthy and are impulse buys that you’ll casually toss in your cart on the way to pay.

Now, let’s get to the good stuff. Did you know that…

Store Have Manipulative Shelf Placement

If you’ve walked down the cereal aisle wondering why it’s so hard to find the healthy muesli option, you’re not alone…

That’s because supermarkets have very specific shelf placement strategies that are intended to make you buy more expensive products…

And in the case of cereals, it even targets children.

Take a look the next time you’re shopping and you’ll notice that the brightest colored, marshmallow cereals are right at eye-level for a 5-year old…

If that’s not manipulative, then I don’t know what is.

And that’s not all – the healthiest cereals will be hidden in one of the corners of the aisle to focus your attention on the store brands and products that generate the most profit.

You might think that the cereal aisle is a special case, but it’s not – it happens on every other aisle as well.

And here’s another grocery store tactic, as well as how to beat it…

Can Headphones Save You Time and MONEY?

Your local grocery store likely has created a playlist that results in the best possible sales…

Including lighter pop, classical, and slower instrumental music. Why? It’s not based on musical taste, but rather that these types of music…

  • Deliberately slow you down while you shop
  • Relax you
  • Make you lose track of time

All to make you spend more time in the store and spend more money!

You see, after about 25 minutes of shopping, something interesting happens…

Instead of making logical choices, your brain starts to make emotional shopping decisions…

And after about 40 minutes, the transition is complete and you’re no longer thinking rationally, which obviously translates to more items you don’t need in your cart.

Fortunately, the solution is simple – wear headphones whenever you go grocery shopping and pick out some upbeat music…

You’ll be astounded how quickly you’re now able to complete your shopping trip without falling into the supermarket’s trap.

I also recommend setting an alarm for 20 minutes after entering the store to avoid emotion-based shopping.

It’s Designed to TRICK You!

Believe it or not, the layout of your local supermarket was purposefully created to influence your buying decisions…

And every chain is guilty of it, from Wal-Mart to Food Lion to Kroger to Albertson’s.

Did you ever wonder why milk, bread, and eggs are always near the back of the store? It’s because you’ll have to walk past everything else to get to these staples.

And why is the produce section almost always immediately on your right when you enter? It’s because most people shop in a counter-clockwise direction, which means you’ll spend more time when you first arrive…

Getting you closer and closer to that previously mentioned emotional state before you hit the high-profit center aisles.

And while we’re on the center aisles…

Your healthiest options in the supermarket are found on the outside perimeter…

It’s where all the produce will be, fresh meats, dairy, and other less-processed foods…

But in the center of the store? That’s where you’ll find all the ultra-processed foods that present the greatest risk to your health…

  • Snacks like potato chips
  • Frozen prepared foods and TV dinners
  • Sweets and cake mixes
  • Canned vegetables that are less healthy than their fresh counterparts

And much, much more.

Of course, this is all intentional and my solution is to start by going quickly through the aisles in a clockwise manner and finishing with the healthy outside perimeter…

This way, you’ll get the basic staple goods you need while you’re still shopping smart…

And if you stay too long or make a mistake, at least it’ll be in the healthy part of the store.

The Big Picture

You’ve probably noticed a theme throughout this article…

That everything your local supermarket does is meant to get you to spend more money.

And that’s why I felt compelled to write down some of the tricks I know they’re using…

But there’s a ton more, and probably some that are still so subtle that they haven’t been identified yet. Grocery stores are big business and in modern times, that means using every weapon they have to influence your buying habits…

However, you’ve got some weapons as well…

Make sure to check the blog in a couple of days for my next article, which will show you how to beat the grocery stores at their own game!
