Apple Cider Vinegar: The 2019 Health Ingredient of the Year

You might think that the year’s not over yet…

Or that some fruit, vegetable, or other food might swoop in at the last minute to take the title…

But for me, the ingredient of the year is crystal clear, and it has been for quite some time now…

It’s been on the news, it’s what your neighbors have probably mentioned, and heck, even those in the medical community are touting the healing properties of this seemingly magical elixir…

My award for 2019 Health Ingredient of the Year goes to…

Apple Cider Vinegar…

Or ACV, as it’s come to be known recently.

And with so much talk about this substance, let’s go ahead and get the big question out of the way…

What Exactly is Apple Cider Vinegar?

Now, if you’re anything like me, then seeing apple cider vinegar come into fashion is somewhat surprising…

That’s because it’s been well-known since ancient times to have exemplary health benefits…

And even more, it’s not like ACV is hard to find – it’s been hiding in plain sight at pretty much every single supermarket in the country…

That’s because it’s an extremely simple product (hint, hint – I’ll show you how to make apple cider vinegar later in this article)…

So, what exactly is ACV?

Well, at its core (pun intended), it’s fermented apple juice…

And before you ask – it DOES NOT contain alcohol…

The reason is that during the fermentation process, a combination of yeast and bacteria work together…

  • The yeast converts the sugars in the apples to alcohol.
  • And then the bacteria transform that alcohol into acetic acid.

Leaving you with a sharp, sour-tasting vinegar that is claimed to be the solution for everything from cleaning your teeth to curing diabetes…

But are these claims true?

Let’s take a closer look…

Does ACV Cure Diabetes?

I’ve heard this a few times over the year, and I just want to set the record straight…

By itself, apple cider vinegar does not cure diabetes… that’s best done with diet modification and other lifestyle changes…

However, and this is a big however, ACV does do an absolutely terrific job of dealing with some of the most common diabetes symptoms…

High blood sugar and insulin sensitivity.

And the effects of ACV in these two areas are incredible. It…

  • Reduces your pre-breakfast fasting blood sugar by up to 4%
  • Can lower your blood sugar by 34% after eating high carb foods
  • Insulin efficiency improves considerably (30+% or more)

So no, there isn’t a magic bullet for diabetes and prediabetes, but apple cider vinegar comes about as close to it as possible…

And if that were all, then ACV would be worth its weight in gold, but there’s much more…

A Quick Roundup of ACV Health Benefits

Sometimes simple is better…

And in the case of apple cider vinegar, that’s certainly true. Not much more than time and a few ingredients goes into vinegar, but the advantages you gain from using it are tremendous:

  • Weight Loss Stimulant – This one is surprising, but it’s backed by scientific studies. When patients consumed just one tablespoon of ACV per day, they lost an average of 2.6 pounds more than those who didn’t.
  • Strong Anti-Bacterial Properties – Making apple cider vinegar requires bacteria, but one it’s made, ACV is an excellent solution to prevent bacteria growth. That’s why it’s traditionally used to preserve foods, dress wounds, and handle bodily infections.
  • Reduces Your Risk of Heart Disease – The research shows that ACV not only lowers cholesterol but also helps you keep your blood pressure in check. Both of these issues are key indicators of elevated heart disease risk.

These health benefits sound great, right?

But there’s a piece of information missing and it’s a pretty important one…

How Do You Take Apple Cider Vinegar

To enjoy all the advantages that apple cider vinegar can bring…

I encourage you to start by mixing a tablespoon with a glass of water and drinking it directly before bed…

From there, you can move up to 2-3 tablespoons with water based on your personal preference…

And if you want other ways to incorporate ACV into your diet, then I suggest you to…

  • Make your own salad dressing with ACV as a base
  • Splash onto beans for a sour kick
  • Brighten up your meats and stews with a few drops before serving

Of course, with all these uses, you may need a hefty quantity of ACV. That’s why I wanted to share with you…

How to Make Apple Cider Vinegar at Home

You can buy apple cider vinegar from the store, and that’s perfectly ok…

But if you want complete control over the ingredients and want to tailor your ACV to your personal tastes, then I highly recommend making your own…

That’s because it’s ridiculously easy – I mean, so easy that there’s literally only 3 actual ingredients…

And it’s near impossible to make a mistake.

However, the quality of apple cider vinegar that you’ll end up with when you make your own is certainly better…

And you may find that you like certain apples better than others for making vinegar…

Ingredients

  • Mason or other quart jars
  • Coffee filters
  • Rubber bands
  • Apple cores and skins, chopped (I prefer a mix of Gala and Honeycrisp varieties)
  • Sugar or honey
  • Water

Instructions

  1. Make a mixture of water (1 cup) and sugar (1 tablespoon) and stir well to dissolve. Depending on how much vinegar you’re making, you may need several cups.
  2. Fill your jars with the apple leftovers, leaving about ¼ of the jar free.
  3. Cover the apples completely with water, but leave some room at the top of the jar.
  4. Cover the jar using a coffee filter and rubber band, and place in a kitchen cabinet (or another dark, warm place).
  5. After 2-3 weeks, strain out the apple leftovers, cover with the coffee filter/rubber rand, and place back in the cabinet.
  6. Test the vinegar each week and once it reaches your preferred taste, simply replace the coffee filter with an actual lid for the jar you’re using.

And that’s it – you’ve got a whole jar of apple cider vinegar to enjoy!

Now, what I like to do is make one big batch of both applesauce and vinegar every year when apples are in season…

That way, I never really run out and I have a gift I can give to my family as well.

Apple Cider Vinegar – The 2019 VIP

So, with the year coming to a close, I’m glad to say that apple cider vinegar is finally getting the recognition it deserves…

While some of its benefits may be exaggerated by hype, the truth is that it can and does do wonders for your health…

And it’s certainly worth your time to pick up a bottle or two on your next shopping trip…

Or go a step further and make your own.

So, what do you think about apple cider vinegar?

Has 2019 opened your eyes to the power of fermented apple juice… or have you been using ACV for years?
