3 Big Reasons to Check Your Food Ingredient Labels ASAP

How often do you check the ingredient labels when you go grocery shopping? Well, after you read today’s article, you’ll definitely do it more often!

In the past few weeks, artificial sweeteners have been a hot topic…

And if you want to know what I think of them, I’ll give you a hint: two thumbs down…

But this new trend got me to thinking about my readers and whether there might be some other potentially dangerous substances out there that you’re eating on a regular basis…

So I came up with a list…

And just like Santa Claus, I checked it twice by doing more research and came up with a few more of what I consider to be the biggest hidden offenders in modern foods…

Artificial sweeteners and sugar may be public health enemy number one, but these following three aren’t too far behind…

That’s because all three are deceptively marketed in a way that they APPEAR healthy, even though there’s clear research that says otherwise…

So if you notice any of these foods on an ingredient list, please think twice before eating it…

Danger Food #1 – Carrageenan

red algae from which carrageenan is extracted

Carragee… what?

If you’re like most people, then you probably have no idea what carrageenan is…

And that would be perfectly fine… if it wasn’t hiding in many of the foods you may be eating.

You see, carrageenan is a common additive that’s used to give dairy and meat products a thicker texture or stabilize it for a longer shelf life…

Now, here’s the thing – carrageenan is a NATURAL additive, coming from a type of seaweed that grows nearly everywhere in the world’s oceans…

And it’s been used in some form or another for more than 1,500 years.

Sounds great, right?

Well, this is one ingredient where humans truly got it wrong…

The reason being is that scientific studies have proven that degraded carrageenan can wreak some serious havoc on your gut, creating ulcers, causing inflammation, and disrupting the good bacteria in your digestive system…

Not only that, but it’s a carcinogen as well…

You would think that with such clear proof, food manufacturers would be forced to stop using carrageenan, but sadly that hasn’t happened…

With the tricky argument from their side being that “food-grade” carrageenan is different from degraded carrageenan and thus, safe for people…

However, the truth is that every product with carrageenan tested in a landmark report showed that they ALL contained at least some degraded carrageenan…

So in my opinion, it’s definitely on the list of ingredients to avoid. The only problem is that it’s everywhere, in…

  • Diet Soda
  • Vegetarian/Vegan hot dogs
  • Beer
  • Pate
  • Ice Cream
  • Salad Dressing
  • Yogurt Products
  • Condensed Milk
  • Condiments

And many, many more!

For me, carrageenan is a perfect example of what’s wrong with the FDA approval process – it’s clearly an ingredient that causes harm to humans…

Yet it appears on nearly every single aisle of your local supermarket…

While carrageenan might be hiding deep on an ingredients list, this next one is right out in the open…

Danger Food #2 – Processed Grains

a plate of white bread slices

Regular readers of my articles might already know that I’m actually a pretty big fan of grains…

I like oatmeal in the morning and homemade whole wheat bread with honey is one of my guilty pleasures…

But there’s another type of grains out there and it’s one that has become so pervasive that I can almost guarantee you that you’ve got it in some form in your home…

What I’m talking about are processed or refined grains.

Imagine taking a nutritious ingredient like wheat, and removing everything good about it – the fiber, the vitamins, all the nutrients…

And then passing it on to unknowing American consumers…

Well, that’s exactly what happened in the 1950s…

And from those beginnings, it spread like wildfire in the form of white bread, veggie chips, and a ton of salty and sweet processed foods.

Yet it’s been condemned from a wide range of American health organizations, including the American Heart Association (AHA), because it has the following health effects:

  • Spikes blood sugar
  • Increases risk of Type 2 diabetes
  • Can lead to depression in women after menopause
  • Reduced heart health
  • Raised risk of heart attack

And to top it all off, the way processed grains are marketed is misleading at best and if you ask me, intentionally deceptive…

To know if you’re getting whole grains, it MUST have the word “whole” written on the ingredients (or brown for rice)…

But in most cases, other terminology will be used that makes the product SEEM healthy, terms like multigrain and unbleached flour…

And because it’s so cheap to produce, it shows up all over the place, with some estimates saying that the average American gets half their calories from these heavily processed foods.

Now, this last one might surprise you because it’s often talked about in regards to healthy eating…

Danger Food #3 – Soy

a bowl of soy beans with a mason jar of soy milk

Soy has been a major hit this year…

From the rapid growth of soy milk’s popularity to its use in fake meat products that are sweeping the nation…

However, soy comes with a few problems…

Not least of which is the fact that countless people are allergic to it, including more than 3 million people in the United States alone…

But even for those that don’t have an allergy, there’s another major issue – most soy grown in the U.S. contains glyphosate…

And if that word sounds familiar, it’s probably because you’ve heard it before and know it as…

Roundup – a commercial herbicide that’s extremely common in the U.S. even though it’s been banned in health-conscious countries like France, mainly because of the reports that it causes…

  • Eye and skin irritation
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Burning throat
  • Nose and throat issues
  • And even death in some overdose cases

But you can avoid it, right?

Well, really, the only way to be sure that you’re buying glyphosate-free soy is to make sure that the product or ingredient is listed as USDA-Certified Organic.

Any soy without this labeling will almost certainly have glyphosate and be from genetically modified crops…

So be sure to read closely the ingredient labels the next time you buy soy milk, tofu, protein bars, or basically anything else that might contain soy.

As I mentioned above, the easiest way to make sure that you’re not consuming carrageenan, processed grains, or glyphosate-containing soy…

Is to check over the ingredient labels with a fine-tooth comb.

It’s a sad state of affairs when these substances are allowed in our food, but that’s, unfortunately, the current situation…

And until new legislation passes that keeps our food supply safe and cleans all ingredient labels of silent killer substances…

It’s important to keep a watchful eye over what makes it onto your plate…

If you want to boost your health naturally in order to face these dangerous hidden substances, we recommend you…
